Behind the Mulberry Door

First came nawwTy’s kitchen, an ala carte food service and custom catering business that Manila’s elite would order for their private parties and gatherings. Next came The Gourmand Market, a fresh open-air food market where foodies could wander around and discover new finds. Three years after Trish Panlilio first ventured into Manila’s food industry, the food enthusiast, purveyor of good taste and entrepreneur opened Mulberry Door by nawwTy’s kitchen, her first restaurant along Forbeswood Road: the newest restaurant hotspot in Bonifacio Global City.

Charming interiors make you feel right at home.

“Apart from my friends prodding me to open a restaurant, we were given an offer for a very good location,” shares Panlilio. “It seemed like it was the natural next step to take.” They say the devil is in the details and together with her three sons Quintin, Matteo and Luca—her business partners—she transformed the space into a tasteful dining room featuring fresh flowers, glass chandeliers wooden floors and furniture. The cozy space also features a bookshelf filled with books, wine and glassware, and the whole effect feels like you are dining at a good friend’s home.

Mulberry Door serves luxe comfort food—items Panlilio believes is an extension of what made nawwTy’s kitchen such a success. “We are taking things to the next level,” she says. “I absolutely adore anything crab fat and so our crab fat paella with chicarron crumbles and garlic prawn and crab fat linguine that we serve here are clearly favorites.”

The curated menu includes other equally decadent specialties such as bone marrow French onion soup, osso bucco with parmesan risotto, prawn thermidor au gratin with mixed greens and a lamb burger with homemade taro chips, a favorite of her son Matteo. Diners familiar with nawwTy’s kitchen will be happy to know her classic ribeye is also on the menu.

Trish instilled a love of food in her sons at an early age. They had their own taste of success as food entrepreneurs by opening several food stalls at the Gourmand Market. Trish says her boys are very much involved in the business of Mulberry Door. “From the beginning, they have been helping find a name for the restaurant, conceptualizing ideas and handling day-to-day responsibilities.”

Abreast of what’s new and exciting by way of the Gourmand Market, Panlilio has become aware of what the Filipino market needs in the dining scene. “The past years have seen a boom and it’s quite exciting that there is a diverse selection of different types of cuisine today more than ever,” she says. “Mulberry Door has become another part of home where the four of us can share food we love with patrons new and old on a daily basis.”
