What makes a Supermom? Is it a female superhero like Wonder Woman or Darna— but with kids in tow? Is it a Martha Stewart-like figure who can make everything from scratch, has an immaculate household and is an active member at school and society? Do Supermoms really exist?

I believe they do—but they aren’t supernatural beings from another planet—they are humans who exist among us. They are far from perfect no matter what their Instagram feed might look like. They are all moms I know – the moms who love and take care of their children, husbands and homes as much as they do themselves. Moms who sometimes fail at taking care of any of the above for whatever reason, but pick themselves back up and start again.

Supermoms may have partners who help them with raising the family or they might single-handedly take care of their little ones. I even know gay men who are fabulous moms—and dads—to their children. They come in all shapes and sizes.

For me, Supermoms are women (and men) that I look up to yet call them friend, sister or mother. Supermoms are not mythical characters but real everyday heroes. I’ve rounded up a few women who I believe are Supermoms in their own way. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!Trends_People_Supermoms_ Stephanie_Crespi

1. What is the most fulfilling aspect of motherhood for you?
I think it’s learning to love someone else infinitely than yourself and this notion of selflessness carries over to other aspects of your life. I’ve become more patient, understanding and considerate with motherhood. It’s also all the hugs, kisses and snuggles that I get!!!

2. What is the most challenging?
It’s definitely an exercise in patience! Especially with a toddler! But fortunately Sebastian is a bright boy and in most case can be reasoned with. But when there’s a meltdown – things go nuclear!

3. What would you consider a perfect day?
A perfect day is when I manage to churn out an article, work out, have lunch with a girlfriend, get to taping or a meeting and spend the afternoon in the park with the kids and the evening with the hubby. Its possible! I’ve had those days and I feel like superwoman but it’s usually when I wake up at 4AM—so the next day I’m a little bit useless.

4. I chose you as a Supermom because you manage to take care of your kids, husband and yourself and make it look so easy. What’s your secret?
The secret is really letting things go. I have a daily list of priorities and some things just get bumped off and put off for another day and I just have to be OK with that. Some days it’s more important to cancel a meeting or push back a deadline because my son really needs me at school or other days I have to accept I only get to see my kiddos for a quick goodnight kiss. It’s all about balance and flexibility for me. Also weekends are sacred. It’s hard to pull me away from my family on weekends.

5. What advice can you give about motherhood?
There is no one size fits all—you do what works best for you and your family. Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise!

1. What is the most fulfilling aspect of motherhood for you?

All of it! The highs, the lows, the perfect moments, the tear-out-your-hair episodes. I love being a mother, especially to my three little humans.

2. What is the most challenging?

The most challenging aspect is navigating each new stage. Once you think you’ve got the hang of something, inevitably it will change abruptly. My eldest is a very spirited child. So full of zest and fun but also extremely strong willed. Being that he’s my first child, everyday with him is sort of a testing ground. Some days I get it right, some days I don’t. I do feel sorry that he’s my guinea pig. As the oldest out of 3 kids myself, I know exactly what that feels like.

3. What would you consider a perfect day?

A day out with my 3 kids and my husband at the beach. We all love the sun, sea, and sand. It’s our happy place.

4. I chose you as a Supermom because you manage to take care of your kids, husband and yourself and make it look so easy. What’s your secret?

Haha, the key phrase is: “make it look easy”! It isn’t ever effortless. There’s so much you have to balance. The trick is to not let it consume you. Everything is on a sliding scale. Some days see more time dedicated to certain areas of your life than others. My one piece of advice is to take care of you. Your well-being should be one of your top priorities because without it you can’t look after anyone else. Without fail, I block off that one hour per day that is dedicated to exclusively to myself. It is always for either yoga or running. This way I’m multitasking by looking after both my physical and emotional health. Getting on the mat in particular helps center and ground me. I really don’t know how I would tackle each day without my daily dose of Om.

5. What advice can you give about motherhood?

Be well prepared. By that I mean do your due diligence. Research, ask questions, and really educate yourself. And then after you do all that, listen to your gut. You know what works best for your family.

1. What is the most fulfilling aspect of motherhood for you?

Seeing my kids turn out to be good people and growing up with good manners and morals.

2. What is the most challenging?

Instilling those morals! Seriously though, you take for granted that they will just know how to be good, what is right and wrong. But you need to be intentional in always doing the right thing and not just telling them about it.

3. What would you consider a perfect day?

A day when I can sleep till 8AM. Work out with just me and my trainer in peace. Go to the parlor. Go to the grocery and then cook a whole meal from scratch. Then eat cake before sleeping and watching a good TV movie!

4. I chose you because you manage to take care of your kids, husband and yourself and make it look so easy. What’s your secret?

I wake up at 5:30 am everyday.

5. What advice can you give about motherhood?

Be patient and count to 25 before you react to anything. And write everything down on paper or Post-Its… because you will forget!

1. What is the most fulfilling aspect of motherhood for you?

Seeing my children happy and healthy and watching them become independent, responsible people who care about the world they live in and helping people.

2. What is the most challenging?

Having to juggle three children, taking care of my husband and managing a business at the same time.

3. What would you consider a perfect day?

Spending a day with my family and ending it by having dinner together, most probably a home cooked meal where everyone helped in the cooking.

4. I chose you as a Supermom because you manage to take care of your kids, husband and yourself and make it look so easy. What’s your secret?

My secret is being blessed with my two wonderful nannies that take care of everything for me. They’ve been with me since the birth of my children and our Yaya Gen is the nanny of both my first and now, third child. It also helps when you have great staff to keep your home running smoothly.

5. What advice can you give about motherhood?

Take it all in and enjoy every second of it. It passes so quickly. Memories of playing Play Doh or tea house or showing them that pretty butterfly will mean so much more, especially when they go off to college.

1. What is the most fulfilling aspect of motherhood for you?

Watching my children succeed and become independent individuals, seeing them through an important milestone in their life — because their success is my success, too.

2. What is the most challenging?
Allowing them to make their own mistakes and learning from it. As much as you want to insulate them from all the terrible things in this world, you have to learn to let go and allow them to grow.

3. What would you consider a perfect day?
With most of my children grown, a perfect day is when we can all just be together. Either a family trip discovering new places together or revisiting an old favorite place. Or just sitting down for a home-cooked meal that everyone helped put together.

4. I chose you as a Supermom because you manage to take care of your kids, husband and yourself and make it look so easy. What’s your secret?
I am my family’s biggest cheerleader and supporter. If someone crosses their path, I am the first obstacle block they have to go through. If they call for help, I’ll be the first to hold their hand. But at the same time, I also allow myself to have time for myself and my own dreams. I am their support system and a friend. I want them to feel comfortable hanging out with us (mom and dad) like they would with their friends.

5. What advice can you give about motherhood?
Motherhood does not come with an instruction manual. You kind of wing it and each child is different from the other. Parenting is not one size fits all. You can’t be too hard on yourself when things go wrong. In the end, you know that it all sometimes works out.

 1. What is the most fulfilling aspect of motherhood for you?

The most fulfilling aspect of motherhood for me is to see my children grow up happy into adulthood and become successful in their own way.

2. What is the most challenging?

To be able to instill values that I taught them while they were growing up and for them to practice these in their own lives as well.

3. What would you consider a perfect day?

A perfect day is every day. When we wake up in the morning, it is already a perfect day – truly a gift from the Lord.

4. I chose you as a Supermom because you managed to take care of your kids, your husband and yourself and make it look so easy. What’s your secret?

The secret of managing your children, your husband and the entire household is being
prayerful. You start your day with prayers and ask God to help you cope with all the challenges in dealing with your problems and end the day with prayer to thank the Lord for all the blessings, joy and suffering that you encountered that day. You will find peace in your heart and will sleep soundly at night knowing that God is with you and watching over you each and every day.

…And because it’s Mother’s Day after all, one of our writers Katrina Castañeda would like to give tribute to her Supermom as well:

  1. What is the most fulfilling aspect of motherhood for you?

That I am able to use my energy to take care of not just my children but also extend my love to my grandchildren. I am happy to create memories with them while they’re still young.

  1. What is the most challenging?
Finding time to be together now that our schedules have become hectic due to work. Good thing we have an online family group where we update each other of how our day went. I also get a glimpse of my apos, thank God for technology.

     3. What would you consider a perfect day?

A day spent with good food with the whole family. I also love days when the family could come over and spend the weekend in my house in Tagaytay.

  1. I chose you as a Supermom because you managed to take care of your kids, and yourself and make it look so easy. What’s your secret?

It’s no secret but they say that you have to find your purpose in life. Now that my children are more settled in their own ways, I’m driving my focus in creating a passion project. The growth of my paper flower business was unexpected but a happy surprise and it was a success that was created out of opportunity. I’m thankful for the constant support of the family and loyal customers who never fail to give me a pat on the back just to show that I’m doing a great job.

Hope everyone’s having a superb Mother’s Day!
