Getting to Know Manila’s Superfood Traders

Amaranth, berries, chia, kale, matcha, quinoa, raw honey, spirulina, turmeric… I’m tempted to make an A to Z list of all the superfoods I’ve encountered or tried since the summer of 2012. That was the year when I decided to be more conscious of my food intake and lifestyle choices.
Before that, I was battling skin asthma and countless allergy attacks. I was a regular patient in dermatology clinics, not to get facials but to get prescriptions for topical and oral medications for my hives and rashes. After getting tired trying to cure my skin problems with medications that gave short-term benefits, I decided to work on things I could control and listen to the other side of my doctor’s prescription that said, ‘shift to healthier lifestyle choices, make adjustments to your diet’. I researched on options that led me to find superfoods a.k.a. foods that are packed with minerals, nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and have abundant health benefits. Just google the word ‘superfoods’ and you’ll know why.

I came across The Superfood Grocer and created my own ‘Go Green in 2013’ campaign by incorporating green smoothies in my diet, not as a way to lose weight but to increase my fruit and veggie intake. I noticed that by adding spirulina, maca or chia to my green smoothies, I felt less lethargic and noticed that I had lesser allergy attacks. So I would say that this shift has worked well for me!
While based in Melbourne, I helped a friend set up his small-batch matcha distribution business called Zenwonders Matcha and was introduced to the many benefits of this green tea wonder. Although I admit that I couldn’t give up my coffee intake, I find that matcha and turmeric tea (with black pepper and lemongrass) are equally appealing substitutes when I want an instant pick-me-up.

I recently experimented on making bliss balls using raw cacao, coconut flour, dates, flax seeds and matcha so I could cut down on my sweets although I’m still guilty of sneaking in a bar of chocolate sometimes (wink wink!). And when I’m really lazy, I make a trip to the nearest Juju Eats or Fruit Magic/ Pure Nectar stores to get a bottle or two of their cold-pressed juices.

As with all things healthy, the secret is in the meal prep. Friends have asked me where I get all of the weird stuff that I put in my food. I used to find it difficult to source these products but fast forward to 2017, I can confidently say that there are now a number of healthy food sources you can trust. Plus, some of them deliver too! So if you want to take another chance at being kinder to your body, you might want to get to know these superfood traders in Manila and fill your pantry with their goods:
Because of its many uses, the coconut palm is known as the ‘tree of life’. Coco sugar is an all-natural sweetener with a low glycemic index (GI) and is ideal for people with blood sugar and weight management goals. Apart from giving you sustained energy throughout the day, it has a wonderful flavor that complements most recipes. It’s a perfect pair that enhances the flavor of your matcha latte, too! Know more about their products from our article here and go loco with Coco(ro) and all the recipes you can make with it.
