Farm-to-Table: Earth Kitchen
How often do you find yourself eating at a restaurant and wondering where the ingredients they use come from? I bet not that often. Let’s be honest, it’s not something we usually wonder about. Most of the time, we focus on the quality of the food and its price, but not so much on how it is sourced. Not a lot of us realize the importance of knowing where or from whom our food comes from.
At Earth Kitchen, they’re all about organic and natural produce. The restaurant is dedicated to supporting local farmers and indigenous communities around the Philippines. The goal? “To sustain the livelihood of marginalized communities and encourage more farmers to produce good, clean, healthy food – without the use of genetically-modified organisms (GMO’s), chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, and harmful inputs like petroleum-based urea, herbicides and pesticides.” (source)

Earth Kitchen is actually a partnership project between Got Heart Foundation and Hizon’s Catering. Got Heart was built to celebrate love and gratitude, to recognize how we are all interconnected. It wants to help create a real and lasting social impact to marginalized communities. Basically, Got Heart creates “heartlinks” – different ways for people to help and opportunities for the marginalized to help themselves. They’re not just about dole-outs, as they believe it creates dependency (not to mention unsustainability), so instead, they create social enterprises, targeted programs, and support systems to bring out the best of those who have the least. Together, they are working with Hizon’s Catering, one of the top catering services in Manila, to create quality dishes for Earth Kitchen.
Most of the dishes Earth Kitchen serves are made from scratch. This includes pasta, ice cream, tortilla, risotto, soups, etc. They understand that doing so will entail higher costs, but quality is always their topmost priority, as well as being able to provide more chances to source natural and fresh ingredients locally.
