Our definition of a dad: A son’s first hero; a daughter’s first love. Agree? Fathers work so hard and sacrifice so much for their families – they work day and night to be able to provide not only the necessities, but to give their families the most comfortable life possible. They always put our needs (and wants) first before their own, always making sure that we get only the very best. As we grow older and take on more responsibilities, we realize more and more the hardships they had to face. So this Father’s Day, may we do our part to make them feel special and show them how grateful we are for all that they’ve done for us with a delicious and memorable meal at these restaurants!

1. Johnny’s Steak and Grill

If affordable steaks are what you’re looking for, we have just the place for you! Johnny’s Steak and Grill along Scout Rallos Street has a great selection of meats – from certified angus beef, USDA beef, tenderloin, wagyu beef, and lamb racks – starting at Php 750! Not only that, they offer the best side dishes to go with them! Their steak rice is a classic with onions, peas, and shaoxing wine or go for their truffle fries which are deep fried to a crisp perfection!

2. Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse

Here’s an option if you want to walk around before (or after) your meal since it’s located inside UP Town Center – Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse! It’s perfect for meat lovers as they offer all kinds of smoked meats. We suggest ordering their Smoked Meat Platter, which is a sampler of all their best-sellers like the Smoked Hot Links, Smoked Pulled Pork Shoulder, Smoked Beef Brisket, Smoked Chicken BBQ, Smoked Pork Ribs. It comes with the following sides: Chiquito’s Grilled Corn, Bacon and Chives Muffin, Sesame Coleslaw, and four servings of plain rice. All that for Php 2,400. Not bad. Not bad at all.

3. Kam’s Roast

If you haven’t heard yet, Michelin-star restaurant Kam’s Roast recently opened its first branch in SM Megamall. This was made possible by FooDee Global Concepts, the same group who brought us Tim Ho Wan, Tsuta, Todd English, and many more! Be warned though – long lines are to be expected as roast duck aficionados have be lining up for this one since it opened a few weeks ago! It’s definitely worth the wait as we’ve heard nothing but great things about its Crisp Roast Pork, Toro Char Siu, BBQ Pork, Roast Duck, and Roast Suckling Pig!

4. Empacho

For a more traditional Filipino feast, check out Empacho Restaurant and Bar along Tomas Morato! It’s a haven for those who want a taste of home and be reminded of the familiar dishes that their mom or lola would prepare for the entire family. Here, you can expect to find Filipino favorites like Tokwa’t Baboy and Crispy Pork Kare-Kare, but you can also enjoy their own versions and twists with dishes like Sisig Fries, Spicy Tamarind Wings, Balut Tempura, Sizzling Laing na Sugpo, Bulalo Pares, and Sinampalukang Tadyang. Don’t forget to order their Bibingka Cassava Cake for dessert!

5. GEN Korean BBQ House

With Korean restaurants popping up left and right, it’s hard to figure out which one offers quality more than quantity. For this, we suggest trying out GEN Korean BBQ House, a concept that started in the US. Unlike in other Korean BBQ places, GEN veers away from the norm by fusing different flavors and using ingredients from all over the world. Here, you no longer need to dip your meats in gochujang (Korean chili paste) as they have already been marinated and come out really flavorful when cooked. If you’re on a budget, come for lunch, as it’s around Php 500 cheaper than dinner, though the menu only consists of 28 items (as compared to dinner which offers 35). Our favorites for lunch are their Hawaiian Bacon, Spicy Pork Bulgogi, and Red Wine Samgyupsal; while our dinner favorites are GEN Signature Yangyum Galbi, GEN Premium Top Blade Steak, Calamares Frits, and Soondooboo Soup.

6. Paradise Dynasty

If Xiao Long Bao is what he’s craving for, you can head over to Paradise Dynasty at any of its two locations here in Manila – S Maison and Podium! They have a Specialty Dynasty Xiao Long Bao Basket, which includes all eight of their XLB flavors – original, ginseng, foie gras, black truffle, cheese, cab roe, garlic, and szechuan – so you can find your favorite! We personally suggest getting a basket each to fully enjoy the experience. Those who are fans of spicy food will also enjoy their Poached Sliced Fish in Szechuan Chili Oil and Spicy Szechuan Crispy Chicken! For seafood lovers, we recommend their Chilled Jellyfish and Seafood in Vinaigrette and Crispy-Fried Crystal Prawns tossed with Salted Egg Yolk.

7. Mamma Mia

Italian cuisine has always been one of the top choices for celebrations, so why not check out Mamma Mia at Uptown Mall? It is a casual dining restaurant that serves spectacular Italian dishes, some of which you probably won’t find anywhere else. They have a wide menu catered to pizza, pasta, meats, and seafood, so it’s definitely worth a visit. For starters, order the Baked Brie with Fried Onions and Fresh Mushrooms. The Italian Bacon and Meatballs Bomb, which are filled with spicy marinara have also gotten really good reviews. For the pizza, there’s the Mortadella e Pistachio that’s drizzled with pistachio cream sauce, crushed pistachios, and Italian sausage that will surely be a treat for pistachio fans. If you find yourself craving for crispy pata along the way, you’ll be glad to know that they have an Italian version of that in the Stinco di Maiale. But if there’s one dish you really, really have to order, it’s the Spaghetti Carbonara ala Mamma Mia! It’s rich, cheesy, and creamy in just the right amounts!
