Stylish Wicker Bags Purrfect For Any Girl
Over the summer, we saw a lot of our favorite bloggers sporting stylish wicker bags all over social media, and as it turns out, it is actually the biggest bag trend this 2017!
According to the internet, it all started when Cult Gaia came out with their Ark Bags and everyone just had to have some kind of version of it. Before, these wicker or straw bags were only reserved for summer use, but even now that it’s already the rainy season here in the Philippines, you can still see people using them around the metro.
One brand that we discovered just recently is Style Cat by lifestyle blogger Yuki Tansengco. Just last July, Tansengco released her first ever collection, Style Cat Resort: Take Me to Purradise, and I couldn’t help but get myself a bag the day of its release because the designs were just the cutest thing ever!
“Style Cat is a lifestyle brand that sets out to deliver fresh new styles for all the fashion-savvy cats out there. It specializes in bags of every kind that stylishly integrate indigenous materials like abaca, raffia and banukan in their design, and are customized with detailed embroidery and fringing to suit every gal’s style.”
Everything was actually inspired by Tansengco’s travels around the globe, so in this collection, you’ll see travel-friendly bags playfully designed with hand-embroidered toucans and flamingos, dainty daisies and trendy pineapple prints by our local artisans!
The tropical-inspired resort collection come in three different bag styles: a fuss-free and roomy open tote that holds all of your beach essentials, a two-way sling that can also be worn as a cross-body or a handbag for gals on-the-go, and a mid-sized basket bag for casual day-to-night activities. You’ll be glad to know that all bags are fully lined, have inner pockets for all your valuables, and a dust bag. Currently, each bag purchase comes with a limited edition Style Cat dust bag created by Plush and Play nanays.
Since her Manila Bay clean-up trip in high school, Tansengco made a mental note to be more environment-friendly. So when she entered college, she started Yuki Makes Things where she created accessories using up-cycled materials and sold them to her block mates in De La Salle University. Soon, she started a fashion blog showcasing the different accessories she made and documenting her daily outfits, including her ukay-ukay (second hand) finds, which people loved, by the way. Five years later, The Style Cat Resort Collection was born. “Merging my love for style, travel, and sustainable fashion, I created Style Cat, an eco-ethical line of locally made resort/wicker bags for equally adventurous curious cats,” says Tansengco.
Tansengco guarantees that Style Cat Resort’s woven products are made from sustainably-sourced materials. She has also chosen artisans based in Albay to produce her bags (by hand, and not through mass production), not only making fashionistas happy, but also these talented craftsmen by giving them an opportunity to earn a steady income.
Meet the Aruba (left) and Calaguas (right); Aruba features four hand-embroidered flamingos on a woven base topped with black raffia fringes, while Calaguas features four hand-embroidered pineapples with colorful green fringes. Both are open tote style, come fully lined and with an inner pocket.
The Uluwatu is a spacious resort tote made with abaca and raffia. It features a hand-embroidered twinleaf design topped with a crochet cherry charm and soft leatherette handle.
The Santhiya (left) and Port Douglas (right) are both made with banukan and abaca, accented with two raffia tassels, and come with leatherette detachable slings paired with gold hardware. Choose between bring a hand-embroidered daisy or a colorful toucan on your next adventure.
